Already
in antic und byzantinic time the bay of Methoni was an important place to anchor,
saved with some islands. But with the trading of Venice it got strategic meaning.
In 13. Jhdt. the venezian began to build. 1500 Methoni felled in turky hands in
spite of 7000 solders. 1685 back to Venice, 30 jears later again to Turky. Up
and down and everyone built a little peace of fortress.
In
the later time Methoni was a slavemarket and also a point of support
for egyptian troups with Ibrahim Pascha. 1828 it was delivered
from the french and since that time it is greec.
With a 14 bows bridge, which was built in 1828 from the frenchman, you reach the
castle.
There lived 2.000
humans. You need some phantasie if you visit this place, because there are nearly
no buildings any more.
After
passing the entrance you see a monolithic pillar, bevore there
was a Markuslion. Also you find a türky Hamam, a byzantic
church, a zystern and the rests of a minarett.

Through
the harbordoor "Porta die San Marco" you can go over
a bridge dam to the island Bourtsi, where is standing now the
two- (bevore three-) floored tower. It is from turky time (16,
Jhd.), is very good conserved and its good to climb it, there
is the best sight to the castel, the bay and the islands Sapientsa,
Shiza and Agia Maria.

By
visiting the castle you have to wear good shoes. Who knows it
what arts of animals there live!
The stones from the castle you find in very much buildings, because
long time it was to take the material from castle. Now it should
be renovated.
Entrance is free, but how long?
